Reader Retreat

Have you ever wished for a camp for grown-ups, only maybe with fewer required activities and more quiet time? Do you long to be among kindred spirits, surrounded by good books and delicious food? Is your idea of paradise a small Southern town with giant oak trees, walkable streets, and quaint shops?

Then we’ve planned an event with you in mind.

Spots are now open for our next retreat, scheduled for February 10-12, 2023. Register for our February retreat here.

Accommodations are in partnership with the Courtyard Marriott in Downtown Thomasville. Your retreat reservation includes a two-night stay in the downtown hotel, a happy hour and dinner on Friday night, and Saturday and Sunday morning breakfast, as well as literary events and activities mentioned below. There will be a complimentary shuttle available for the weekend from the Marriott to all Bookshelf-sponsored activities.

You may choose to add an additional night to your stay; please call the Marriott directly to make those additional reservations at a discounted rate. Don't forget: Proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID test is required to attend, and retreat reservations are non-refundable.

Check in at Thomasville's Courtyard Marriott (the cost of the booking is included in your retreat reservation), then feel free to explore beautiful downtown Thomasville! Guests and Bookshelf staff will have a happy hour together, followed by a Pen to Plate dinner party hosted in partnership with Chef John Gregory. Guests may check in at the Marriott as early as 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon; happy hour starts at 5:30; and dinner will begin at 7:00 p.m. (Some guests may choose to check in a day early on Thursday for a special discounted rate. You’ll need to call the Marriott directly to secure your additional night.)

We’ll begin Saturday with breakfast from Empire Bagel, followed by a book club discussion. Guests can enjoy lunch and shopping on their own in downtown Thomasville, all within walking distance of the Marriott and The Bookshelf. Recommendations will be made to ensure guests experience all our quaint downtown has to offer.

In the afternoon, retreat attendees may choose to attend a silent reading party together, then reconvene for a staff-led panel conversation about our favorite books, followed by a workshop and grownup story time.

Guests will be responsible for their own dinner plans, and at 6:00, The Bookshelf will open for a private tour of our store and offices, followed by an after-hours shopping opportunity at 7:00, exclusive to retreat attendees. At 8:00, attendees will attend a live podcast recording of From the Front Porch, The Bookshelf’s weekly podcast. If you’re not ready for the fun to end, you can choose to go out for drinks and dessert after the podcast recording ends.

Don’t go! But if you must, please join us first for a farewell breakfast at the Marriott at 8:30 (our treat!). Then if you forgot that one perfect thing at The Bookshelf, the store will be open for browsing from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.  Guests may also choose to relax in downtown Thomasville and spend an extra night for a discounted rate. Contact the Marriott directly for details.
