We've been making a difference in South Georgia and North Florida for over three decades. At The Bookshelf, we believe in the power of books to shape communities and foster conversations. Our staff has curated a quality collection of literature across genres, and each month, we host over a dozen story times, author events, educational workshops, and more. We love literature and paper and interesting conversations, and we believe a life enriched by books is the very best kind of life.
Our shop in beautiful downtown Thomasville, Georgia, is open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, with extended hours for special events and occasional weekends. Like us on Facebook or follow us on Instagram for daily updates on our favorite new titles, upcoming events, book club meetings, and children's story times. Listen to our weekly podcast, From the Front Porch, to hear our latest recommended reads and for behind-the-scenes bookshop stories.
Join us every Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. for story time with local kiddos! We gather in our children's section for 15 to 20 minutes to read a picture book together, then work on a themed craft and talk about what we've read. We love gathering with the children and helping them learn to love reading as much as we do! Saturday story times are led by our shop owner, Annie, or local or visiting authors.
SHELF TALKS + SIGNINGS
It's our goal to make our bookstore a gathering place for readers and writers across the South. Throughout the year, we host a variety of author signings and events. Follow us on Facebook or see our events page for a complete listing of our upcoming author visits.
We love supporting local, regional authors, and signings are a great way for our customers to meet these often undiscovered writers. Snag some one-on-one time with the new-to-you authors by attending these signings, hosted Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Follow us on Facebook or see our events page for a complete listing of our upcoming author visits. (And if you're a regional author hoping to schedule a signing with us, click here!)
ENTERTAIN YOUR INNER NERD
The Entertain Your Inner Nerd series at The Bookshelf is just like going back to school -- only there's no homework involved! This fun, eclectic event series is designed to educate nerds of all kinds in a fun and intimate environment with experts on poetry, bullet journaling, chess, and everything in between coming to teach their craft.
Birthdays are a wonderful time of celebration, and The Bookshelf would love to host your party! For $75, your little one can have their birthday party surrounded by the books they love. Parties are currently hosted from 10 - 11 a.m. on Saturday mornings! Included in the fee: appointed staff member for party, story time, craft, balloons, decorated chalk board sign, one hour reserved at The Bookshelf, and a copy of your child's favorite book. Contact us to save the date!
ONE BOOK THOMAS COUNTY
Every year, The Bookshelf partners with Thomas County Public Library to celebrate literacy with One Book Thomas County. Our entire community reads one book together, and we spend a week celebrating the chosen book and its themes. This autumn, we're honoring To Dance with the White Dog by Georgia author Terry Kay.
Looking for a stress-free book club to join? Each month Annie picks her favorite book of the month to feature in her Shelf Subscription box, then hosts an hour-long discussion about the same book on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Tickets are the same price as the book, or you can snag a free ticket by signing up for Annie's Shelf Subscription. This month's pick: Young Jane Young by Gabrielle Zevins.
PEN TO PLATE
Inspired by another indie bookstore, The Bookshelf hosts in-store dinner parties twice a year in partnership with Southern Jubilee Catering, owned by John and Anna Carroll Gregory. These Pen to Plate dinners feature delicious recipes hand-selected by John and The Bookshelf staff. Dinners sell out quickly, and tickets include a copy of the cookbook.
STITCHES & STORIES
Annie's a relatively new knitter, but after a couple of classes at Fuzzy Goat, she was hooked. Now, in partnership with Cadence and Fuzzy Goat -- Thomasville's local yarn shop -- The Bookshelf co-hosts Stitches & Stories, an audiobook club designed for local knitters. The group meets at Fuzzy Goat and The Bookshelf (alternating) on the third Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m.
Our weekly podcast, From the Front Porch, is a collection of conversations on books, small business, and life in the South, hosted by Bookshelf owner Annie Jones and staffer Chris Jensen. Each week, we share book reviews and stories from the shop, all recorded from the comfort of Annie's home settled among the streets of downtown Thomasville.
We're over 100 episodes in, so catch up with past conversations here. Long-time listener? Consider supporting us on Patreon for bonus episodes and behind-the-scenes content. Follow along our adventures in retail, meet Thomasville's diverse cast of characters, and listen as we share our favorite books of the season.
